The original Sooty puppets from the 1960s, belonging to Harry Corbett’s son, are set to be auctioned for an estimated value of up to £6,000. Dave Corbett, who served as an inspiration for the famous children’s TV phenomenon alongside his brother Matthew, is selling the iconic yellow glove puppet along with two Sweeps and two Soos. Additionally, a mechanical device used to operate Soo is included in the collection, providing a unique glimpse into the puppetry techniques used behind the scenes.
The legacy of these puppets dates back to 1948 when Harry Corbett, a renowned puppeteer, purchased a glove puppet named ‘Teddy’ to entertain his young sons during a holiday in Blackpool. Over time, the puppets became an integral part of the Corbett family’s life in Guisley, near Leeds. Dave, now 81 years old, has decided to part ways with these cherished pieces of television history, which will be auctioned at Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall, Derbyshire on April 23.
The sale will also include a specially designed mechanical device crafted for Dave’s mother, Marjorie, who operated Soo and contributed significantly to the show. With a deep connection to the Corbett family, these puppets hold immense sentimental value and are expected to attract interest from museums, private collectors, and enthusiasts of British TV memorabilia.
Sooty made his TV debut in 1952 and quickly rose to fame with his magical antics. The puppets, distinct from commercial versions due to their specific design for puppetry, were generously gifted by Harry to friends and colleagues. The upcoming auction, facilitated by Dave, promises an opportunity for these unique pieces to find new homes where they will be cherished and celebrated for their role in entertainment history.
Over the years, the mischievous Sooty interacted with various celebrities, including a memorable encounter in 1955 with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, during which he playfully squirted the Duke of Edinburgh with a water pistol. The enduring charm and appeal of these iconic puppets continue to captivate audiences, making them timeless symbols of entertainment excellence.
