An Australian woman recently shared her remarkable experience of uncovering a large number of long-lost relatives through a DNA test. Adriana Turk, the daughter of a German Jewish father who escaped Nazi Germany in 1937, had believed that her extended family perished in the Holocaust.
After the passing of her brother, Julian, in December 2024, Adriana delved deeper into her family history, anticipating only fragmentary details. To her surprise, she discovered over 50 living relatives spread worldwide.
Among the newfound relatives were numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and their descendants, including individuals linked to three Holocaust survivors from her grandmother’s lineage, identified through MyHeritage DNA.
Reflecting on this revelation, Adriana expressed her initial assumption of being alone in the world, especially after losing her brother. However, the discovery filled a void within her, bringing a sense of completeness.
Recently, Adriana met one of her newfound relatives, her cousin Raanan Gidron, a 73-year-old psychotherapist residing in Israel. Raanan’s mother endured the horrors of the Theresienstadt and Auschwitz concentration camps before escaping Europe and marrying someone who also suffered losses during the Holocaust.
Raanan shared that they had always known of relatives in New Zealand but had difficulty tracing them. Adriana, who spent her childhood feeling invisible and empty, finally feels that a missing piece of her life has been found.
The heartwarming reunion of Adriana and Raanan coincides with Holocaust Memorial Day, which honors the six million Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust and millions more persecuted under Nazi rule. This reunion also reflects a growing trend among Jewish individuals reconnecting with long-lost family members through DNA testing.
Raanan emphasized the message of hope their reunion brings, particularly during a time of fear and anxiety within the Jewish community following tragic events like the mass shooting in Bondi, Australia, where 15 people lost their lives, including a young girl. The suspect, Naveed Akram, faces multiple charges, including 15 counts of murder, while his father was killed during the incident.
As they continue to share their story of reunion and resilience, Adriana and Raanan offer a beacon of hope amidst challenging times, highlighting the enduring strength and interconnectedness of family ties.
