A woman entrepreneur who featured on the television show “Dragons’ Den” has spoken out against the program, criticizing its treatment of participants as “outrageous” and “cavalier.” Charlotte Clemence expressed her disappointment with how two of the Dragons handled her business proposal, questioning the integrity of the show and feeling that viewers are being misled.
Despite being praised on the show and receiving promises of investment from Dragons Sara Davies and Steven Bartlett, Charlotte revealed that the investments never materialized. She started her outdoor art business, YardArt UK, as a way to fulfill a lifelong dream following the tragic loss of her baby daughter. Charlotte felt that the show lacked a duty of care towards her.
She emphasized that the portrayal on TV did not reflect the reality of the investment process, where deals could fall through even after being agreed upon on screen. Charlotte, who is from Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, emphasized that the experience left her in a state of uncertainty both financially and emotionally.
While she acknowledged the need for due diligence in business, Charlotte criticized the show for not adequately preparing participants for the possibility of deals falling through. Despite the setbacks with the Dragons, YardArt UK has continued to thrive, showcasing Charlotte’s resilience and determination.
In response to the controversy, a spokesperson for “Dragons’ Den” highlighted the show’s commitment to real business and investments, emphasizing the rigorous due diligence process that follows any deal made on the show. They stated that deals falling through is not uncommon in the business world and reiterated their focus on the well-being of the entrepreneurs involved.
