“Drone Disaster: 90 Drones Plunge in Sydney’s Vivid Show”

Date:

A spectacle of lights faced disruption when close to 90 drones unexpectedly plummeted from the sky at a well-liked tourist destination. Video footage captured the scene as numerous drones fell from the night sky over Sydney’s Darling Harbour, leaving onlookers in disbelief. The company in charge, Skymagic, attributed the unusual incident to a radio frequency alteration causing a glitch, ensuring that all drones remained within safety boundaries.

The organizers of the annual Vivid Sydney festival cited unforeseen technical challenges for the malfunction that occurred on Monday. Consequently, they have called off several upcoming shows planned for the three-week festival. A spokesperson from Skymagic later revealed that 89 drones had landed in the water around Cockle Bay, with 83 plunging into the harbor and six onto the boardwalk.

Karen Jones, the CEO of Destination New South Wales, issued an apology to the disappointed spectators, acknowledging the inconvenience caused. The future drone show scheduled for Sunday night remains uncertain pending further evaluation of the situation.

Describing the aftermath, a Darling Harbour employee named Robert recounted the significant noise as the drones crashed onto the wharf, even from a distance. Festival organizers emphasized that a thorough assessment by Skymagic and government agencies must occur before any remaining shows receive approval. An official from Vivid Sydney expressed regret for the letdown and disruption to attendees.

The Star-Bound drone exhibition, involving 1,000 drones set for a 12-minute performance, faced a setback amid the recent incident. Vivid Sydney had introduced drone shows in 2024, receiving substantial attention. Last year, concerns over overcrowding led to the exclusion of drone displays from the event.
