“Drug Dealer Receives Life Sentence for Teen Rival’s Murder”

Date:

A convicted drug dealer who killed a teenage rival in a drug turf conflict received a strong message from the victim’s family. Leon Bangura, 21, fatally stabbed Kalvin Taylor, 19, with a large knife during a brief drug raid in Norwich. Bangura, a member of the “Lenny” gang, attacked Taylor, a member of the “Batman” county lines gang. Upon Bangura’s sentencing to life in prison with a minimum of 31 years, Taylor’s grandmother emotionally addressed him, expressing unforgiveness for the heinous act.

Lorraine Hall, in a heartfelt statement, criticized the swiftness of the murder compared to making a cup of coffee. She conveyed the immense loss felt by the family, emphasizing the daily absence of Taylor and the enduring grief. Despite Taylor’s troubled associations, Hall cherished his presence in their lives and regretted her inability to shield him from harm.

During the trial, it was revealed that Bangura’s motive was not solely to recover a drug debt but also to steal drugs or money from Taylor. The court heard that the fatal incident occurred during a robbery, leading to Bangura’s conviction for murder. Despite Bangura’s acceptance of responsibility for the death, his defense highlighted his troubled upbringing and susceptibility to negative influences.

Apart from the murder charge, Bangura also admitted involvement in supplying class A drugs and possession with intent to supply. The incident stemmed from clashes between rival drug factions, resulting in Taylor’s tragic death during a confrontation over a debt. Bangura claimed self-defense, alleging he feared for his life upon seeing Taylor armed with a knife.

Bangura’s co-defendants were acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges, while another individual was cleared of aiding an offender. Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Dave McCormack praised Taylor’s family for their strength during the challenging investigation and trial. He commended the dedication of law enforcement and partners in seeking justice for the victim.
