A notorious crime leader has been found guilty as the sixth individual convicted in the tragic killing of Joanne Penney in a case of mistaken identity. Renaldo Baptiste, a drug kingpin already serving a life sentence, orchestrated the failed hit on a rival gang member that resulted in Joanne’s death. The incident occurred in Talbot Green, near Cardiff, where the assailants mistakenly targeted Joanne, a 40-year-old mother of four, who tragically lost her life to a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Baptiste, who was convicted of another murder in 2021, utilized prison communication to coordinate the deadly attack on March 9, 2025. He is among four additional individuals convicted in a subsequent trial related to Joanne’s murder, including Molly Ruth Cooper, Laura John, and former Arsenal footballer Donna James. Earlier trials had already resulted in convictions for five others involved in the crime.
During the trial, Baptiste admitted to involvement in illegal activities, including acting as a middleman for drug deals orchestrated by his associates. He confessed to being part of an Organized Crime Gang and acknowledged his role in sourcing drugs for other individuals involved in criminal activities.
The chain of events leading to Joanne’s tragic death involved a dispute over territory in Talbot Green, prompting one group to seek retribution through violence. Messages exchanged between Baptiste and one of the assailants indicated discussions about obtaining a firearm and ammunition for the planned attack.
Following the shooting, attempts were made to conceal evidence, with one individual burying the weapon and ammunition near their residence. DNA evidence linked one of the convicted individuals, Molly Cooper, to the bullets used in the crime.
Joanne’s family expressed profound grief over her untimely passing, describing her as a beloved family member cherished for her kindness, strength, and unwavering love for her relatives. The community rallied around the family, offering support and condolences during this difficult time.
