“Duchess of York Faces Removal of Honorary Title”

Date:

Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York, faces the possibility of losing her “Freedom of the City of York” recognition as an official meeting convenes to discuss its removal. This honorary status was bestowed upon her in 1987 during a visit to York after her marriage to Prince Andrew.

In 2022, the council decided to revoke the same honor from her ex-husband, previously held by distinguished figures like Winston Churchill and Judi Dench.

Following revelations and images linking him to Epstein, Prince Andrew relinquished all his royal titles last October. Consequently, Sarah Ferguson no longer uses her ‘Duchess of York’ title and has reverted to her maiden name.

Councillor Claire Douglas, the Labour leader of the City of York Council, expressed dismay in October over any association with Epstein by individuals linked to the city. The vote on Ferguson’s status is scheduled for this evening.

Sarah Ferguson has been under scrutiny due to her past connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, whom she once regarded as a close confidant. Controversy escalated after an email from Ferguson to Epstein emerged in 2011, praising him despite his criminal record.

Charities withdrew their support from Ferguson in late 2025, prompting speculation about a potential television appearance. Pressure mounts for her to provide testimony regarding her ties to Epstein, mirroring demands for Prince Andrew to do the same.

Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, part of the House Oversight Committee investigating Epstein’s case, indicated a need for Ferguson’s testimony, believing she possesses pertinent information. While there is no legal obligation for her to testify in the US, Subramanyam expressed a willingness to accommodate her under oath for questioning.

Virginia Giuffre’s family advocates for Ferguson to travel to the US and provide answers related to the Epstein investigation. A representative for Giuffre’s brother emphasized the urgency of Ferguson’s potential testimony in the United States.
