Expressing his gratitude for being in Medicine Hat and participating in the games, MacIntyre, who plays as the left forward for Team Alberta, emphasized his desire for engaging matches, fair play, and strong competition to achieve success.
After meticulous planning spanning eight years and extensive travel for 1,700 athletes, the games have commenced. The city of southern Alberta aspires to showcase its warm hospitality to all participants.
The event features nearly 1,700 athletes competing across ten sports, including bocce, bowling, powerlifting, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, and softball. Vibrant crowds adorned with provincial flags and pompoms filled the 6,000-seat hockey arena during the lively opening ceremonies.
Governor General Louise Arbour commended the high level of activity, volunteerism, and sportsmanship at the event, describing it as an incredible phenomenon showcasing Canadian community spirit. Nicola Lambrechts, chair of Special Olympics British Columbia, praised the dedication of the athletes representing their provinces with joy and pride.
In Medicine Hat, approximately 1,500 local volunteers eagerly welcomed 1,500 family members and coaches accompanying the athletes. The city’s 13 hotels were fully booked, reflecting the overwhelming community support for the event.
Medicine Hat takes pride in its history of hosting major events, boasting modern facilities and a strong volunteer culture. Despite facing challenges such as the cancellation of the 2022 games due to the pandemic, the city is committed to enhancing its profile through hosting events like the Special Olympics.
The event’s $3.6 million budget is sustained through government grants, community contributions, and corporate donations to cover essential expenses like transportation, accommodation, meals, and organizing costs.
