“Edmonton Transit Faces Safety Concerns Despite Initiatives”

Date:

In the early hours of Monday, March 2, an individual using Edmonton’s public transit system was physically attacked while passing through Churchill Station en route to the Valley Line LRT. The rider recounted being struck in the face and shared details of the incident in a subsequent text message to Transit Watch, Edmonton Transit Services’ safety reporting platform. The rider explained a delay in reporting the assault, stating a primary intention to swiftly leave the location and return home.

On the same day, Transit Watch received multiple reports from riders highlighting various safety concerns, including instances of harassment, drug usage in public, drug transactions, an incident where a fire was ignited at a bus stop, and an individual brandishing a flame lighter within a transit center. Over the years, the City of Edmonton has made efforts to enhance safety on public transportation by increasing the presence of peace officers and police, expanding outreach teams, and investing more in cleaning and security enhancements. Despite these initiatives, text messages sent to the reporting line within a one-month period earlier this year revealed ongoing apprehensions among many riders regarding safety within the transit system.

Several reports emphasized apprehensions related to drug usage and smoking at LRT stations, bus stops, and pedways. Instances of witnessing individuals consuming meth, crack, and fentanyl on transit premises were mentioned, along with reports of harassment and verbal abuse directed towards passengers. Concerns about drug deals, drug paraphernalia discoveries, disruptive behaviors like urination and shouting, and safety hazards such as shattered glass and blood pools at transit locations were also frequently reported.

Regular transit user Katarina Hamilton, who contacts Transit Watch monthly, shared observations of individuals obstructing entrances and starting fires, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours. Hamilton recalled a past incident involving a violent altercation at Central Station, prompting her to notify Transit Watch and seek police intervention to ensure safety, especially for nearby children.

Despite efforts to address safety concerns, surveys conducted by ETS indicate that the percentage of riders feeling secure during their transit journeys remained unchanged at 61% in 2025 compared to the previous year. ETS Branch Manager Carrie Hotton-MacDonald noted the complexity of factors influencing riders’ safety perceptions, making short-term perception shifts challenging. The increase in texts to Transit Watch during colder months and the rise in police responses to violent incidents at LRT and transit centers suggest ongoing vigilance is necessary.

To enhance rider safety, ETS is implementing various measures, including the addition of 30 peace officers and an eighth community outreach team. Initiatives such as providing cellular connectivity in LRT tunnels, engaging with riders, offering travel training support, and enhancing station infrastructure aim to boost safety perceptions. City Council members, like Coun. Anne Stevenson, underscore the importance of ongoing efforts to address the root causes of safety challenges, with initiatives such as pop-up events at LRT stations and safety attendant programs being supported.

Acknowledging the societal complexities underlying safety concerns, leaders like Coun. Jon Morgan stress the need for comprehensive solutions, including increased support for housing and addiction treatment services. Experts like David Cooper highlight the collective efforts required from all levels of government to sustainably address public transit safety issues. Cooper’s research on public transit safety underscores the importance of continuous support and collaboration to achieve lasting improvements in safety standards across transit systems.
