A call for a fresh examination of undisclosed nursery charges has been made by the Education Secretary following complaints from parents about being levied fees to access government-funded hours. The provision of up to 30 hours of complimentary childcare a week has been broadened, but some parents are reporting compulsory fees to avail themselves of the service.
Childcare providers have the authority to impose additional charges on parents for items such as meals, snacks, nappies, or optional activities. Nevertheless, these fees should not be obligatory or a prerequisite for accessing a funded spot. Authorities have the power to take action against childcare providers found in violation of these regulations.
Seventy-two percent of parents reveal that they are dipping into savings to cover these extra expenses, with over a quarter citing cost as the primary obstacle to obtaining childcare. Bridget Phillipson has formally requested the independent Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to conduct an investigation.
Additionally, the government has introduced a new tool to help parents find local childcare services, starting with a trial in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and Bath and North East Somerset before a nationwide launch later this year. Ms. Phillipson emphasized the significant impact of 30 hours of funded childcare on family finances, with an average annual saving of £8,000 per child.
Since September 2025, all eligible families with children aged nine months to four years can access 30 hours of complimentary childcare each week. Parents of children aged nine months to two years must meet specific earnings criteria to qualify, while all three- and four-year-olds are entitled to 15 hours of free childcare per week. Working parents meeting the earnings threshold can claim the full 30 hours. The Department for Education estimates that over 500,000 families are currently benefiting from funded childcare.
