An elderly former police officer has been sentenced to prison for secretly filming a young girl while she was using the restroom. John Bishop, a retired officer with 30 years of service, was found to have a collection of disturbing images of child abuse.
During the sentencing, the victim’s father confronted Bishop, expressing his disgust and wishing shame upon him for the rest of his life. The court learned that police received a tip about Bishop’s online activities, leading to a search of his home where they seized eight electronic devices, uncovering indecent images.
Prosecutors revealed that Bishop possessed 26 pictures and videos in the most severe abuse category, along with additional illicit images. Among them were photos taken by Bishop himself, showing a young girl using the toilet in 2017.
Despite denying any inappropriate interest in children during interviews, Bishop admitted to the charges of taking indecent images, voyeurism, and possession of illicit material. His defense attorney highlighted his age, lack of prior convictions, and community involvement, advocating for rehabilitation rather than imprisonment.
In the end, Bishop was sentenced to 14 years in jail by Judge Stuart Driver KC, who acknowledged his health issues but emphasized the gravity of his offenses. Additionally, Bishop received a 10-year restraining order and a sexual harm prevention order, requiring him to be listed on the sex offenders’ register for a decade.
