An elderly woman tragically passed away after reportedly falling into a pothole. The woman, identified as Beryl Barrett, allegedly got trapped when her walking stick became lodged while at a crossroads near a town hall in Warsop, Nottinghamshire, on December 19. Sadly, Mrs. Barrett succumbed to her injuries a week later, on December 26.
Following the incident, calls for action on potholes have intensified from Mrs. Barrett’s family, local MP Steven Yemm, and concerned residents. MP Yemm has engaged with Mrs. Barrett’s family and plans to address the pothole issue with fellow Members of Parliament. He has urged the Nottinghamshire Council, under Reform Party leadership, to allocate more resources to road maintenance to prevent similar tragedies.
In response, MP Yemm initiated a public petition urging the council to repair and uphold the roads, emphasizing that the current conditions pose risks to vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Expressing his dismay over the deteriorating state of the roads contributing to Mrs. Barrett’s demise, MP Yemm vowed to raise the matter in Parliament and criticized the council’s road maintenance efforts despite increased funding.
In remembrance of Mrs. Barrett, the Warsop Parish Council observed a moment of silence and addressed residents’ concerns about local road conditions. The Parish Council pledged to advocate for residents’ grievances and collaborate with the Nottinghamshire County Council for potential solutions.
Councillor Bert Bingham, Nottinghamshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, expressed condolences for Mrs. Barrett’s passing and assured a thorough investigation into the incident. The council remains committed to addressing any incidents causing harm on the highways and refrained from further comments pending investigations.
