A woman has shared her dismay after discovering her elderly mother covered in bruises at the nursing home where she resided. Mechelle McBride recounted her observations of her mother’s declining health and unexplained injuries while at Greyfriars Care Home in Mount Vernon, Scotland.
Elizabeth, Mechelle’s mother, who was battling vascular dementia, passed away in December 2022 at the age of 81. Following her mother’s demise, Mechelle took legal action against the care facility, resulting in a substantial compensation payout to Elizabeth’s estate. Mechelle expressed her anguish over witnessing her mother’s inadequate care at the nursing home, emphasizing the distressing situation.
Expressing her desire to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents for other families, Mechelle reported her concerns to the Care Inspectorate after feeling ignored by the care home staff. The regulatory body upheld all her complaints, emphasizing Mechelle’s intent was not about monetary compensation but to ensure accountability and proper care for residents.
Elizabeth had moved to the care home at 79 after a stroke and developing vascular dementia during the Covid pandemic. Despite expectations of personalized care, Mechelle highlighted instances of her mother experiencing falls, weight loss, and unexplained injuries at Greyfriars, contrary to the care she was financially supporting.
Mechelle detailed the distressing visits to her mother, where she noticed a worsening condition with documented bruises and injuries, including instances of inadequate grooming practices. She expressed frustration at the lack of responsiveness to her concerns, leading to her escalating the matter to the Care Inspectorate.
After an investigation, the Care Inspectorate confirmed the inadequacies in Elizabeth’s care, citing concerns over nutrition, communication, and injury management. Mechelle, determined to seek justice for her mother, engaged legal representation, resulting in a significant settlement from the care home. Her advocacy aims to prevent similar neglect and mistreatment of vulnerable individuals in care facilities.
