Emergency responders rushed to the scene of a plane crash where up to 11 individuals are believed to have been injured, as thick smoke enveloped the area. The incident occurred near Sucia Island, located on the border between Washington state in the US and British Columbia, Canada.
The US Coastguard and Airlift North West, an air medical transport service, were observed operating around Shallow Bay according to radar reports. Additionally, a local fireboat has arrived at the crash site.
The aircraft, identified as a Kenmore Air plane, went down on the shoreline of Sucia Island in the San Juan Islands during stormy weather around 5:22 pm local time. The flight, which departed from Lake Union en route to Roche Harbour on San Juan Island, was carrying a total of 10 passengers, as confirmed by Kenmore Air and Orcas Island Fire & Rescue.
Multiple agencies, including the US Coast Guard, Orcas Island Fire & Rescue, San Juan Island Fire & Rescue, Lopez Island Fire & Rescue, San Juan County Parks, and the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, are engaged in rescue efforts at the crash site. However, details regarding the condition of those involved, the type of aircraft, and the cause of the crash have not been officially disclosed.
Preliminary information from Flight Radar indicates that the downed plane was a Kenmore Air DHC-3 Otter floatplane with the registration N709KA. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities continue to assess the situation.
