England received a beneficial change in their World Cup Round of 16 clash against Mexico as the kick-off time was rescheduled. The Three Lions had faced challenges due to the high altitude in Mexico City. However, FIFA informed the FA of a new kick-off time of 12pm local time (7pm UK time) instead of the original 6pm slot. This adjustment was made due to the forecast of thunderstorms in Mexico City, potentially causing a delay.
To mitigate the effects of playing at the high altitude of 7,200ft at the Azteca stadium, England had delayed their arrival in the capital city. The altered schedule is expected to lessen the impact of oxygen reduction on the players, according to human performance expert Steve Magness.
Magness explained that the body’s performance is affected by altitude, with blood plasma volume decreasing rapidly within 24 to 48 hours. The new kick-off time could provide a slight advantage to the England team by reducing the time spent at altitude before the game.
Despite the challenges posed by the altitude, England manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged the difficulty of adapting within a short timeframe. The players were mentally prepared for the match, irrespective of the kick-off time change.
The potential kick-off alteration is seen as just one of many obstacles awaiting the England team in Mexico, as they gear up for a tough encounter at the Azteca stadium.
