England’s upcoming World Cup match has been rescheduled due to the threat of thunderstorms in Mexico City. Originally set to kick off at 1am UK time on Monday, the game will now start at 7pm UK time on Sunday following FIFA’s decision. Weather forecasts indicated severe thunderstorms and heavy rain in the area. Over 5mm of rain was expected at the Banorte Stadium, known as the Azteca, with a large storm system covering the Mexican capital. Tournament regulations mandate a 30-minute delay if lightning strikes within an eight-mile radius of the stadium.
Inclement weather also affected other matches in the tournament, such as France’s game against Iraq, which was delayed for more than two hours in Philadelphia. FIFA has the authority to reschedule or relocate matches for safety reasons. England’s forward Marcus Rashford acknowledged the change was not ideal but affirmed the team’s readiness for any challenges.
The last-minute alteration came shortly after Keir Starmer announced that pubs in England and Wales could extend their opening hours until 5am for fans to watch England’s late fixtures. The Prime Minister’s decision to relax alcohol licensing laws allowed pubs to operate without special late licenses. The match in Mexico City was initially expected to conclude after 3am UK time, potentially running even later in case of a penalty shootout.
