In a thrilling finish at the inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham, Marcus Ericsson secured victory with two key moves. The first was a bump with teammate Will Power during a late-race maneuver, followed by a decisive pass on Romain Grosjean in the closing laps to claim his fifth IndyCar career win. Ericsson attributed the victory to the team’s exceptional pace and strategic execution, emphasizing their dominance on the track.
Romain Grosjean finished second, marking his first top-five result of the season, while Will Power took third and current driver standings leader Alex Palou settled for fourth place. All three drivers – Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who is second in the standings – are teammates at Andretti Global.
Following Kirkwood’s exit from the race in the 53rd lap, the Andretti Global team shifted focus to preventing Palou from gaining more points to secure his fifth IndyCar title. Team principal Ron Ruzewski highlighted the strategic approach to maintain their position in the standings.
Despite a brief miscommunication that led to a minor incident between Power and Ericsson, the race continued with Palou earning 32 points and Kirkwood earning nine. Palou currently leads Kirkwood by 133 points in the overall standings.
Grosjean, who has yet to secure an IndyCar victory since transitioning from Formula One in 2021, faced a challenge in managing his tire and fuel resources towards the end of the race. Ericsson capitalized on Grosjean’s limitations to make a critical pass and secure the lead.
The event saw several challenges, with six caution periods and multiple cars forced off the track due to contact, resulting in only 14 cars finishing out of the 25 that started the race. This year marked the first time that Markham hosted the IndyCar race, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place after a long-standing history.
Despite initial setbacks with the track’s completion causing cancellations on the first day of practice and qualifying, the event garnered positive feedback from drivers and fans alike. Ericsson praised the track layout and expressed confidence in smoother operations for future races at the venue.
