“Escaped Mental Health Patient Charged with Murder in Sydney Stabbing”

Date:

A man who reportedly escaped from a mental health facility is facing murder charges after a violent stabbing incident in Sydney’s western suburb of Merrylands. Setefano Mooniai Leaaetoa, 25, allegedly carried out a random attack that resulted in one fatality and multiple critical injuries. The assault occurred in broad daylight on February 17, just days after his alleged escape from a mental health institution while being transferred between hospitals.

Following the knife attack, emergency services responded to the scene, where one person was pronounced dead, a 21-year-old remains in critical but stable condition, and a 47-year-old is stable, according to the Western Sydney Local Health District. Leaaetoa was apprehended on Smythe Street after fleeing on foot and subsequently charged with murder and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

CCTV footage from 9 News captured the chaotic moments of the attack inside a Nepalese grocery store, where Leaaetoa allegedly targeted multiple individuals. The footage shows him assaulting a woman and a man inside the shop. Superintendent Simon Glasser disclosed that a 25cm knife was believed to be the weapon used, noting Leaaetoa’s prior involvements with law enforcement for minor offenses and mental health issues.

During his court appearance, Leaaetoa’s Legal Aid lawyer did not seek bail, revealing additional charges related to domestic violence. He is detained until at least May 13. The incident prompted NSW minister for mental health, Rose Jackson, to announce a review of the circumstances surrounding Leaaetoa’s escape from health professionals upon arrival at Westmead Hospital. The health district confirmed Leaaetoa’s recent treatment at Cumberland Hospital and his subsequent escape, leading to a formal review of his care and treatment protocols.
