Recent developments have unfolded concerning two airlines in response to flight cancellations amidst the turmoil in the Middle East.
Etihad and Emirates, headquartered in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, initially announced the suspension of flights in light of the US strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions on neighboring countries.
However, both Etihad and Emirates have resumed flight operations this afternoon, with tracking data indicating Etihad planes being the first to resume movement. Dubai’s authorities have stated a “limited resumption of operations,” advising passengers to only proceed to the airport if contacted directly.
In a statement, Emirates mentioned, “Emirates will start operating a restricted number of flights from the evening of 2 March. Priority is being given to customers with earlier bookings, and those rescheduled for these limited flights will receive direct communication from Emirates.
“Please refrain from going to the airport unless you have received notification. All other flights remain suspended until further notice. Emirates is closely monitoring the situation and will adjust its operational schedule accordingly. Updates will be provided on the official website and social media platforms.
The closure of airspace in the Middle East has caused significant disruptions to hundreds of thousands of airline passengers globally. Various Middle Eastern airports serve as crucial hubs for travelers moving between Europe and Australia.
According to analytics company Cirium, out of the 5,340 scheduled flights to the Middle East on Monday, 1,555 were canceled. This included 735 flights to the United Arab Emirates and 255 to Qatar. Each day, approximately half a million passengers utilize airports in Dubai, Doha, or Abu Dhabi.
UK authorities are reportedly formulating plans for the potential evacuation of over 100,000 Britons from the Middle East. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper disclosed that 102,000 British nationals have registered their presence in the region.
Cooper emphasized that around 300,000 British citizens are currently in the Gulf countries targeted by Iran. British nationals are advised to adhere to local authorities’ instructions and closely monitor travel advice from the Foreign Office, which is anticipated to change swiftly.
Individuals in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Palestine, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are urged to register their presence online with the Foreign Office.
