In response to Trump’s warnings, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK issued a joint statement emphasizing their commitment to Arctic security as a shared interest within NATO. They expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, highlighting the importance of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The statement criticized Trump’s tariff threats, labeling them as detrimental to transatlantic relations and potentially leading to a negative escalation. The countries face possible tariffs on exports to the US, escalating from 10% to 25% if Trump’s demands regarding Greenland are not met.
President Trump, in a statement on Truth Social, called the situation a risk to global peace and security, urging swift action to resolve the issue. He signaled openness to negotiations while emphasizing the need for Denmark and the other countries to address the perceived risks and challenges at hand.
World leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, denounced Trump’s tariff tactics, vowing not to succumb to intimidation or blackmail. Despite the growing pressure from the US regarding Greenland, reports indicate that the affected countries were caught off guard by the sudden tariff threats.
The UK recently deployed a military officer to Greenland at Denmark’s request, as part of an upcoming Arctic exercise, denying any formal deployment plans. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and European Council president Antonio Costa supported Denmark’s military activities in the Arctic, dismissing them as non-threatening and cautioning against the potential consequences of imposed tariffs on transatlantic relations.
