“Experience the Chilling Silence of ICEHOTEL’s Artistic Wonderland”

Date:

In the serene environment of the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, guests are not only challenged by the chilling -5C bedroom temperature but also by the profound silence that envelops the snow and ice constructed rooms. The guide, Glen, humorously pointed out the heightened awareness of tinnitus one might experience after a night in this unique setting.

Every year, a team of architects, engineers, and artists descend on Jukkasjärvi to craft a new rendition of the ICEHOTEL. The process begins with harvesting massive blocks of ice from the Torne River, each block weighing up to two tonnes. These blocks are meticulously stored until winter arrives, allowing the construction to commence in October. Unlike conventional ice accommodations, the ICEHOTEL boasts creative and imaginative designs reminiscent of a blend between a fictional ice palace and a whimsical fairground attraction.

Art enthusiasts can explore the 12 distinct art suites before they are inevitably closed in April. Notable installations include ‘Arctic Archive’ by Kristina Möckel and Sebastian Scheller, featuring shelves filled with snow books, and ‘Survival of the Fittest’ by Carl and Malena Wellander, where guests can sleep alongside resilient tardigrades. Another intriguing creation, ‘Crystal Souls’ by Robin Lind and Charlie Hammarlund, showcases enigmatic figures seemingly trapped behind an ice block.

Since its inception in 1989, the ICEHOTEL has welcomed thousands of guests seeking a one-of-a-kind experience. Constructed using 1,000 tonnes of ice and 30,000 tonnes of snow-ice mixture, the hotel’s technical marvel is complemented by its artistic creativity. In addition to the ephemeral art suites, the hotel features a year-round section, the 365 Hotel, where guests can enjoy a drink in the ice bar and lounge area.

While the ICEHOTEL offers a magical experience, the premium pricing may deter some visitors. The cost for an ice room starts at 4000 SEK (£320) for two guests, including breakfast. Additional expenses, such as travel to Kiruna and dining at the ICEHOTEL restaurant, can significantly impact the overall budget. Despite the financial considerations, guests find themselves captivated by the enchanting ambiance and unexpected delights scattered throughout the ICEHOTEL.
