“Lidl to Open 50+ Stores, Create 2,000 Jobs”

Date:

Lidl has revealed its intention to launch over 50 new stores within the next year, resulting in the creation of 2,000 job opportunities. This initiative is part of a comprehensive £600 million investment strategy. Among the locations slated for new store openings are Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire, all scheduled to commence operations this summer. Lidl aims to secure new freehold, leasehold, and long leasehold properties across Great Britain.

The supermarket chain currently operates more than 1,000 stores across the UK, supporting a workforce of over 35,000 employees. Ryan McDonnell, Chief Executive of Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s commitment to positively impacting British communities through their expansion efforts, which not only generate employment opportunities but also provide stability for British suppliers to invest in the future. McDonnell highlighted Lidl’s overarching goal of making affordable and healthy food accessible to all.

Kate Dearden, the Employment Minister, commended Lidl’s investment as a significant contribution to the economy, praising the creation of thousands of quality jobs with fair wages that enhance living standards throughout the country. Lidl recently announced a pay raise for its staff, with entry-level pay set to increase to £13.45 per hour nationwide, reaching £14.45 with tenure. In London, new starter pay will rise from £14.35 to £14.80, escalating to £15.30 based on experience. This pay increase represents an additional £29 million investment by the supermarket.

During the Christmas period, Lidl witnessed a 10% surge in sales, accommodating nearly 51 million customers. The UK division of the company achieved a turnover exceeding £1.1 billion in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve. Customer traffic surged by 8% compared to the previous year, with Lidl serving almost four million more shoppers. Notably, sales of seasonal produce increased by 70% year-on-year, with popular items like easy-peeler clementines experiencing a nearly 40% rise in demand.

Ryan McDonnell expressed satisfaction with the record-breaking Christmas performance, attributing it to Lidl’s dedication to offering competitive prices and promoting British produce without compromising on quality. McDonnell highlighted the supermarket’s expansion efforts and commitment to delivering value to customers nationwide during the festive season.
