Since mid-July, the fall chum salmon season has commenced, with approximately one million salmon migrating from the Bering Sea into the Yukon River, as reported by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Despite this surge, experts caution that this uptick may not indicate a positive trend for the species.
In the previous year, there was a significant decline in chum salmon numbers, raising concerns among researchers. Sebastian Jones, a wildlife analyst at the Yukon Conservation Society, expressed unease over the lack of clarity on the fluctuations in salmon populations, highlighting the limited understanding of these ecosystems.
The proportion of Canadian-origin salmon among the returning fish currently stands at 12%, lower than the typical range of 20-30%. While this figure remains below expectations, Jones acknowledged an improvement compared to recent years, with hopes for 100,000 chum salmon crossing into Canada this year, up from 25,000 in the prior season.
Jones emphasized the need for a higher number of chum salmon entering the Yukon, aiming for figures between 150,000 and 250,000. Stephanie Peacock, a scientist at the Pacific Salmon Foundation, noted that chum salmon, alongside chinook salmon, play a vital role in providing nutrients to the region during the fall migration period.
Both species have experienced declines over time, with chinook salmon showing a steady decrease since the 1990s, while the decline in chum salmon has been more rapid, raising further concerns. Researchers are investigating the Bering Sea, where these salmon originate, noting environmental changes such as rising water temperatures and increased industrial fishing activities, impacting the ecosystem.
While cautiously optimistic about the recent influx of chum salmon, Peacock urged a balanced perspective, considering the long-term decline and persisting challenges faced by the Yukon chum salmon population.
