A dog in Nipigon, Ontario, has been honored for her bravery in defending her family against a black bear last autumn. Chloe, a mixed-breed medium-sized dog, has been inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame for her exceptional courage and loyalty during a life-threatening emergency, as stated in a press release.
Chloe, a rescue dog adopted by Colette and Joe Shwetz in May 2019, displayed remarkable bravery when a bear entered their home on the night of September 16, 2025. Despite her usual quiet demeanor, Chloe sprang into action, confronting the bear in the kitchen alongside Colette. With Joe roused from sleep by Chloe’s barking, the trio managed to corral the bear out of the kitchen and into a hallway before it retreated to the basement.
Colette recounted how Chloe valiantly stood guard, barking and fending off the bear until the authorities arrived to handle the situation. Despite sustaining injuries, all three individuals, including Chloe, received medical treatment and recovered. Chloe was hailed as a hero by her owners and rewarded with a steak dinner for her courageous actions.
Established in 1968, the Purina Animal Hall of Fame has recognized 198 animals, including 170 dogs, 27 cats, and one horse, for their extraordinary acts that have saved lives in Canada. Chloe joins the ranks of esteemed animals like Murph, an Australian Blue Merle Sheepdog from Kenora, inducted in 1984 for alerting her owners to a fire, ultimately leading to the safe evacuation of all residents from the building.
