“Explosion at Valero Refinery in Texas”

Date:

A significant fire erupted at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, triggered by an explosion. Shocking video footage captured the flames engulfing one of the largest refineries in the United States.

The cause of the explosion and the extent of any casualties are currently unknown. The Port Arthur Fire Department has urged residents to take shelter-in-place precautions until further updates are provided.

Local authorities, including Sheriff Zena Stephens and Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso, have confirmed no injuries and all workers are safe and counted for. The incident reportedly involves a heater unit, as described by Sheriff Zena.

Port Arthur, located in southeast Texas, has a population of approximately 56,039 people according to the 2020 census. The Valero refinery in the area, with around 770 employees, has the capacity to process 435,000 barrels of oil daily, focusing on refining heavy sour crude into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

Sheriff Zena Stephens indicated that the explosion likely stemmed from an industrial heater malfunction. Residents in nearby areas are advised to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and follow guidance from local officials.

A City of Port Arthur Facebook post specified the areas where residents should shelter in place until further notice. The Valero Port Arthur refinery, with a nameplate capacity of 435,000 barrels per day, specializes in handling heavy sour crude, particularly Venezuelan grades.
