A potential extension of hosepipe bans that are impacting numerous individuals may occur during this summer season, as indicated by the latest updates. The National Drought Group has issued warnings regarding additional regions in southern, central, and eastern parts of England facing similar drought conditions to those already affecting over a dozen areas nationwide. Several major water companies, including Thames Water, Southern Water, and Southeast Water, have implemented restrictions due to prolonged dry spells without rainfall.
The NDG has identified specific areas currently in a critical stage preceding official drought status, characterized by prolonged dry weather conditions and nearing the implementation of stringent water usage controls. Following a meeting on Monday after 12 consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 30C, the NDG, comprising members from various environmental bodies like the Government and Met Office, identified 13 regions currently experiencing prolonged dry spells.
These regions, under the service areas of different water providers such as Affinity Water, SES Water, and Wessex Water, could potentially witness millions more people falling under hosepipe bans. Presently, temporary bans have been extended to 23 million customers across the UK to safeguard the environment and ease pressure on essential water networks.
The applicability of these restrictions depends on the water supplier in each area. In cases where one major company enforces a ban, water may still be supplied by a different local provider not subject to the restrictions.
The most recent data from the Environment Agency, covering the period between July 2 and 15, reveals an absence of rainfall across central and southeastern England for 14 consecutive days. This prolonged dry spell marks the longest period without rainfall in southeast England since April 1997. In central England, a similar record was set back in 1996, over three decades ago, with a 14-day stretch devoid of rainfall. Helen Wakeham, Chair of the National Drought Group and Director of Water at the Environment Agency, emphasized the impact of the severe lack of rainfall on various industries across the UK.
The forecast suggests that the absence of rainfall will persist in the upcoming days, with high-pressure systems dominating the weather for at least the next five days. Coastal areas, southeast England, and possibly northern Scotland may experience some rainfall, mainly through mid-week showers and potential weather fronts. However, the majority of rain is expected over Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Chief Meteorologist Will Lang at the Met Office highlighted the notably warm and dry summer in England so far, with limited rainfall recorded in July. Despite occasional rain, the overall outlook indicates predominantly settled conditions. Affinity Water, Anglian Water, Cambridge Water, Southern Water, South East Water, Thames Water, and South West Water have all introduced Temporary Use Bans (TUB) in select regions to restrict hosepipe usage, although watering cans and buckets remain permissible. Individuals with disabilities or medical conditions residing in TUB-covered areas can contact their water company for assistance.
Hosepipes, capable of consuming 1,000 liters per hour, exceed the daily water usage of an average family. Restrictions on hosepipe use are crucial for effective drought management, with public support for bans evident when justified by circumstances. David Henderson, Chief Executive of Water UK, acknowledged the challenge water companies face in managing unprecedented demand following record warm seasons.
