Families Express Outrage Over Lack of Prosecution in UK Suicide Harm Case

Date:

Bereaved families affected by online suicide harm cases in England and Wales are expressing outrage over the lack of prosecution for British deaths linked to Kenneth Law. Law recently admitted to aiding suicide in Canada but these charges do not pertain to UK victims.

The decision not to prosecute in the UK, following the rejection of a public inquiry by the Government, means there is no local forum to investigate the approximately 130 deaths that occurred. Instead, the harm caused in England and Wales will be addressed through Law’s sentencing in Canada, as confirmed by the Crown Prosecution Service and the National Crime Agency.

Authorities justified this move citing difficulties in extraditing Law, potential delays, and the expectation that a Canadian sentence would be similar to one in the UK. Consequently, no criminal court in the UK will hold anyone accountable for the British deaths tied to this case.

In response to these developments, families have criticized the lack of accountability. The rejection of a public inquiry and the absence of domestic prosecution have left no avenue for examining these tragic deaths or the regulatory failures in the UK.

Efforts to hold Law accountable have faced setbacks, as UK cases were not initially considered in the Canadian sentencing. Despite three years of investigation involving multiple police forces, the decision was made to focus on securing justice through the Canadian legal process.

The National Crime Agency emphasized the priority of victims and families in decision-making, acknowledging the complexity of the investigation and the unique losses experienced by each family.
