A family in County Durham experienced a shocking incident when a bus crashed into their front garden, prompting them to come to the aid of the driver. Claire Read, 41, and her husband Peter sprang into action after hearing the commotion caused by the single-decker Go North East bus plowing through their property on Hilltop in Stanley early on Sunday morning.
The unexpected crash destroyed trees and a football goal where Claire’s sons, Charlie, 13, and Freddie, nine, frequently played. Approximately 10 passengers were onboard the bus when it deviated off Chester Road East, allegedly running through traffic lights and colliding with a traffic island before ending up in the family’s garden.
Describing the harrowing moment, Claire recounted hearing a loud bang that initially sounded like thunder. Rushing outside, she and her husband were met with the sight of the bus on their driveway, its windscreen shattered. Claire emphasized the driver’s urgent need for assistance, suspecting a medical emergency had occurred as the bus careened through the neighborhood.
Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene, with firefighters aiding in extracting the driver from the bus wreckage. One individual was transported to University Hospital North Durham, though it remains unconfirmed if this was the driver. Despite the significant damage to their home, Claire expressed relief that the focus was on the well-being of those involved, stressing the irreplaceable value of lives over property.
A spokesperson from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service detailed the response to the incident, mentioning concerns about the driver’s possible medical episode leading to the collision. Fire crews from Consett and High Handenhold, alongside ambulance and police personnel, collaborated to assist those affected and evaluate the situation before concluding their operations by 11:15 am.
