The family of a six-year-old girl battling a brain tumor that caused her to lose her eyesight is facing challenges securing travel insurance for a dream trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. Sienna’s life took a turn after a routine eye exam revealed swelling on her optic nerve, leading to the discovery of a non-operable tumor. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, Sienna lost her vision as a result.
Sienna’s family, excited about their planned trip to Florida, received devastating news when the cost of Sienna’s travel insurance skyrocketed to £5,083 following her diagnosis. Originally quoted £232 for the entire family’s coverage, the sudden increase put their trip in jeopardy. Sienna’s mother, Emma Louise Lloyd, expressed disbelief and heartbreak over the situation, as Sienna had been eagerly anticipating the holiday.
The family’s plans were further disrupted when Sienna’s eyesight began deteriorating, prompting a medical investigation that revealed the presence of a grade 1 glioma. Despite efforts to find alternative insurance options, the prohibitive costs made the trip unaffordable for the family.
To offset the financial burden, the family launched a fundraiser that has raised over £6,000. Any excess funds will be donated to the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House charity, which supports families of pediatric patients with free accommodation. The Mirror has reached out to GreatCover insurance for comment on the situation.
