“Farage Faces Scrutiny Over £5M Cryptocurrency Donation”

Date:

Nigel Farage is facing demands for a standards investigation after allegedly failing to disclose a £5 million donation from a cryptocurrency magnate, according to critics. The Reform party leader has been criticized for reportedly receiving the substantial sum from Christopher Harborne, a wealthy individual based in Thailand, just before taking office as a Member of Parliament. Parliamentary regulations stipulate that new MPs must report any donations or gifts received in the year leading up to their parliamentary term.

Farage contends that the seven-figure amount was provided to cover his security expenses. Harborne’s donation reportedly occurred before Farage announced his candidacy in Clacton, as reported by The Guardian. In response to these revelations, Tory chairman Kevin Hollinrake has stated that Farage should have disclosed the donation to the House of Commons and that the Conservative Party is referring the matter to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for investigation.

Labour’s Anna Turley has accused Farage of violating rules by not declaring the financial support from his wealthy supporter. She criticized Reform for downplaying these actions, which she believes further undermines public trust in politics. Harborne, also known as Chakrit Sakunkrit in Thailand, has been a significant donor to Farage’s party, contributing £22 million since 2019, as well as £1.6 million to the Conservative Party. Despite the lack of the £5 million donation on the members’ register of interests, Reform asserts that all regulations have been adhered to.

Farage explained to The Telegraph that the funds were intended to ensure his lifelong safety and security, as he had been unsuccessful in securing government-funded protection. He disclosed instances of threats to his safety, including his home being firebombed and previous physical attacks during the 2024 General Election campaign. Harborne, who has a stake in the cryptocurrency Tether, was reportedly present during an incident where Farage had a milkshake thrown at him while campaigning in Newcastle in 2019.

Amid increasing concerns over the influence of wealthy donors in politics, calls have been made to limit individual contributions. Harry Quilter-Pinner of the Institute for Public Policy Research urged the government to cap donations at £100,000 to safeguard the integrity of political processes. A spokesman for Reform defended the donation as a personal gift given before Farage’s election, expressing confidence in compliance with regulatory requirements.

The MPs’ code of conduct mandates the declaration of financial interests and benefits received in the year before entering Parliament. It emphasizes the obligation for newly elected Members to register any relevant interests promptly to uphold transparency and accountability in public office.
