“Farage Under Fire for Candidate’s ‘Un-British’ Remarks”

Date:

Nigel Farage is facing criticism for not denouncing remarks made by his party’s by-election candidate suggesting that being born in Britain does not automatically make someone “British.”

Matt Goodwin, the Reform UK candidate for Gorton and Denton, has a track record of making controversial statements and has received support from Tommy Robinson. Goodwin previously stated that simply possessing documentation does not define someone as “British” and has refused to retract his statement.

During a recent event, Goodwin reiterated his belief that being “British” is more than a legal status and that not all migrants assimilate into British culture immediately upon obtaining citizenship. He acknowledged successful integration but pointed out instances where British citizens opt to maintain their original cultural identity instead. Goodwin’s views were criticized as divisive and not aligned with mainstream ideology.

At a Reform conference, Farage distanced himself from Robinson but avoided directly addressing whether being born in Britain inherently confers British nationality. When questioned about Goodwin’s stance on Britishness and Robinson’s support, Farage evaded the issue, emphasizing that Robinson’s actions are separate from Reform UK’s agenda.

The Labour Party condemned Farage’s response, accusing him of tolerating extreme viewpoints. Labour representatives emphasized the importance of rejecting support from figures like Robinson and criticized Goodwin’s discriminatory views on Englishness based on race.

The ongoing controversy surrounding Reform UK’s candidate intensified after reports revealed Goodwin’s public mockery of a fellow party member, Robert Jenrick, for using weight loss medication. Goodwin’s criticism of Jenrick’s weight loss regimen raised concerns about internal party dynamics and the growing presence of former Tories within Reform UK.

Despite Goodwin’s previous warnings about the influx of ex-Tory members jeopardizing Reform UK’s identity, the party has continued to welcome former Conservative MPs into its fold, including high-profile figures like Suella Braverman. The evolving composition of Reform UK has raised questions about its direction and potential alignment with traditional Conservative values.
