Nigel Farage is facing criticism for his proposal to reduce a crucial benefit in order to provide a discount of 5p per pint, potentially impacting half a million children by pushing them into poverty.
The leader of Reform UK unveiled a £3 billion support package for pubs, intending to finance it by reinstating the two-child benefit cap. This plan includes various measures such as lowering VAT to 10% for the hospitality industry, eliminating the increase in employer national insurance for hospitality businesses, reducing beer duty by 10%, introducing a new phased abolition of business rates for pubs, and implementing regulations to aid landlords.
Removing the two-child limit, which was initially introduced by the Tories in 2017, is projected to lift approximately 450,000 children out of poverty by 2029. In response, Stephen Timms MP, the Labour Party’s Social Security Minister, emphasized the importance of investing in the future generation and addressing the cost of living through initiatives like reducing energy bills, freezing rail fares and prescription charges, and expanding free breakfast clubs.
Labour MP for Crewe and Nantwich, Connor Naismith, criticized Farage on Twitter, highlighting the trade-off between a 5p pint discount and the potential increase in child poverty. Another Labour MP, Torsten Bell, expressed disbelief at Farage’s policy shifts regarding the two-child limit, likening Reform UK to adopting failed Tory strategies.
During a press conference, Mr. Farage emphasized the critical situation faced by the hospitality sector, describing it as being on the brink of collapse. He underscored the severity of the challenges faced by pubs and the hospitality industry, calling it a looming disaster.
Recently, the Government introduced a 15% reduction in new business rate bills to support pubs as part of a significant economic assistance package. Treasury minister Dan Tomlinson announced that this measure would take effect from April, with pub bills set to experience a freeze in real terms for an additional two years.
