An enraged farmer took action against numerous tourists’ vehicles by spraying them with manure after they unlawfully parked in a field at a popular UK beauty spot.
Video footage captured the moment when approximately 20 cars, illegally parked on private property near Rydal Water in Cumbria’s Lake District, were doused in slurry on May 26. The field is located just a short distance from the picturesque Rydal Mount, where the renowned poet William Wordsworth resided from 1813 until his passing in 1850.
The video footage begins with a visible sign stating “Polite Notice – DO NOT PARK IN THE FIELD,” accompanied by another sign warning of “SHEEP IN FIELD.” A black Mercedes was seen covered in the foul substance, with other vehicle owners visibly upset as they assessed the damage.
Luxury cars such as Jaguars and BMWs were also affected by the incident, which has been labeled as “countryside karma.” The issue of unauthorized parking at the beauty spot has long been a concern, exacerbated during holiday weekends and summer seasons.
The incident occurred amidst reports of a farmer, John Atkinson from the Coniston area, recounting a past altercation where he was stabbed in the chest while confronting a disruptive motorist. Cumbria Police had previously advised visitors to the national park to park in appropriate locations adhering to the highway code.
The video was recorded by Dylan Wakley, 25, while traveling with his partner Emma Hudson, 24, towards Buttermere. The farmer, on holiday in the area from Lyme Regis, Devon, expressed no sympathy for the car owners, attributing their predicament to their disregard for posted warnings.
Online support for the farmer emerged, with one commenter stating, “Never mess with a farmer and never park in their fields.” Another suggested the farmer should receive compensation from car wash companies due to the incident.
Cumbria Police emphasized the importance of parking in compliance with regulations, especially in locations not obstructing traffic flow, including emergency services. Enquiries are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident, involving cars parked on the farm owner’s land without authorization.
Efforts to reach the farmer involved in the incident for comment are ongoing.
