Following an armed standoff in Bedford, a man was fatally shot by police officers.
The incident unfolded after Bedfordshire Police received reports of vehicle damage on Aylesbury Road on Monday night. Upon arrival, officers encountered a man in his 40s who had barricaded himself inside a property and was reportedly making threats.
Specialist armed officers, along with police negotiators and emergency services, responded to the scene around 10.40pm. As a precaution, several residences in the vicinity were evacuated during the standoff.
Authorities attempted to communicate with the man for several hours until he brandished a weapon just after 9.30am the following day.
Subsequently, armed police officers discharged their firearms, resulting in the man’s death shortly before 10.30am. His family has been notified of the tragic outcome.
As the situation is being investigated, residents are being permitted to return to their homes, although a cordon will remain in place pending further inquiries.
Bedfordshire Police has initiated a necessary referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.
