Father Acquitted in Tragic Boat Birthday Party Crash

Date:

A father who organized a birthday party for his daughter and 12 friends that took a tragic turn on a boat has been acquitted by a jury. On September 4, 2022, George and Cecilia Pino celebrated their daughter’s 18th birthday on their boat with several teenage girls who were close friends and classmates, including Lucy Fernandez. The incident occurred when George Pino accidentally collided with a channel marker near Boca Chita Key while steering the boat back to the dock. The collision caused severe damage to the boat, throwing everyone onboard into the water.

Despite the efforts to rescue the passengers, one of the daughter’s friends, 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez, tragically lost her life, and another friend sustained permanent injuries. Following a two-week trial with over 20 witnesses, George Pino, aged 55, was cleared of vessel homicide and manslaughter charges related to the boat crash near Boca Chita Key.

During the trial, emotional testimonies were heard, including statements from Fernandez’s father and Pino’s wife, Cecilia. The jury was shown footage of the birthday celebration turning into a tragic event as the group danced and sang on the boat. Throughout the proceedings, George Pino maintained his innocence, claiming the crash was an accident.

In response to the verdict, Pino’s lead attorney, Howard Srebnick, expressed gratitude to the jurors for their thorough examination of the evidence. Srebnick emphasized that the incident was a tragic accident and not a deliberate act. He highlighted that eyewitness accounts confirmed Pino was not impaired, did not operate the vessel recklessly, and acted responsibly to protect the passengers post-accident.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle acknowledged the impact of the tragedy on all those involved. While expressing a different perspective on the verdict, she respected the jury’s decision as a fundamental part of the justice system. Fernandez-Rundle emphasized the lasting consequences for the families affected and the community as a whole.
