A father shared the heartbreaking story of his daughter’s tragic drowning during what was supposed to be a joyous birthday celebration. Thirteen-year-old Palwasha Akbar encountered difficulties while playing in the River Wharfe at Burnsall, North Yorkshire, on May 31st. Despite being rescued, she passed away in the hospital, becoming one of the 19 casualties of water-related incidents during a week-long heatwave in May.
In response to these distressing events, the Mirror collaborated with bereaved families and organizations like the Royal Life Saving Society UK, RNLI, and RoSpa to launch the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ water safety campaign. Julian Smith MP emphasized the importance of safety measures in areas like the Yorkshire Dales following Palwasha’s tragic passing in a location where another individual had also lost their life in 2024.
Palwasha’s father, Irshad Akbar, described his daughter as a gifted child who tragically lost her life on what should have been a celebratory day. He highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures, including life jackets and fencing around hazardous water areas, to prevent similar incidents. Stressing the importance of parental vigilance near water bodies, he emphasized the unpredictable nature of children and the necessity of keeping them away from danger.
The community is rallying together to raise funds for charitable causes in Palwasha’s honor, aiming to create a positive and enduring legacy. Irshad expressed his desire to shield other children from such tragedies and urged parents to remain vigilant and cautious around deep water. Julian Smith MP underscored the responsibility of national parks to prioritize community safety alongside promoting tourism, calling for a comprehensive approach to prevent further tragedies in these areas.
