A father dealing with a serious medical condition expressed his distress over experiencing sleepless nights due to a nearly 200% increase in his council tax bill. Kurzon Morris, aged 44, disclosed that both he and his wife suffer from myalgic encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, preventing him from working. This condition results in extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties, and impacts on joints and muscles. Living in Wirral, he attributed his heightened stress to the aftermath of a £4 million reduction in a council tax support program.
Residing in Birkenhead, Kurzon mentioned that his monthly council tax charge surged by 176%, escalating from £25 to £69.50. Previously, they benefited from a Wirral Council scheme that entirely subsidized their council tax bill for individuals with low incomes. However, in response to financial constraints, councilors voted in favor of increasing the minimum payment percentage to 17.5%, reaching 50% this year.
Despite receiving various benefits to aid their health conditions, Kurzon expressed his inability to work due to physical limitations. The rise in council tax expenses surpassed any increment in their disability benefits, adding an extra £17 monthly debt from the previous fiscal year. To alleviate financial strain, he resorted to diverting funds from his disability benefits, intended for electric scooter repairs, potentially impacting essential medical expenses covered by the NHS.
Moreover, Kurzon highlighted his reliance on second-hand purchases and assistance from other parents to provide essential items for his son. While empathizing with the council’s financial pressures, he criticized the impact of these decisions on individuals’ livelihoods and well-being, emphasizing the disparity between affluent areas and struggling families within Wirral.
