The father of a young girl who disappeared over four decades ago remains hopeful that she is still alive. Katrice Lee went missing on her second birthday in 1981 from a supermarket in Germany where her father was stationed in the British Army.
Richard Lee, aged 76, is advocating for his daughter to be added to an international database of missing children, similar to other well-known cases like Ben Needham and Madeleine McCann. Despite an American woman claiming to be Katrice and seeking financial support for a DNA test, authorities are skeptical of her identity.
Having served in the Army for more than 30 years, including time in West Germany, Mr. Lee recounts the day Katrice disappeared while her mother and aunt were out shopping, leading to her sudden disappearance.
Initial assumptions by the Royal Military Police that Katrice had accidentally drowned in a nearby river delayed the investigation into a possible abduction, causing distress to the family. Witness statements were delayed, roads were not closed, and crucial information was not circulated, leaving the family feeling abandoned by the authorities.
Richard Lee finds hope in recent stories of individuals being reunited with their families after decades of separation, bringing a glimmer of light to his ongoing search for Katrice. Despite facing skepticism and challenges from internet scammers, he remains steadfast in his quest to find his daughter and bring her home.
With the support of Victims’ Minister Alex Davies-Jones, efforts are underway to elevate Katrice’s case and secure her placement on the Interpol database. Richard’s unwavering determination and belief that Katrice is still out there keep him going, as he continues to fight for her return, refusing to give up until she is found.
