The remains of the final Israeli captive held in Gaza have been located. Ran Gvili’s body was recovered in the northern Gaza Strip’s “Yellow Line” area by Israeli Defences Forces (IDF) following a search operation. The National Institute of Forensic Medicine, in collaboration with Israeli police and the military rabbinate, confirmed the identification of the remains.
Gvili, a former sergeant first class in the Israeli police special forces, was killed during the October 7 Hamas attacks at Alumim kibbutz and subsequently taken to Gaza. The IDF stated that Gvili, a 24-year-old Yamam commando fighter at the time of his death, fell in battle and was then abducted to Gaza.
Hamas, in response, emphasized its adherence to the Gaza ceasefire terms by returning Gvili’s body. The group’s spokesman, Hazem Qassem, affirmed Hamas’s commitment to the ceasefire agreement, including prisoner exchange requirements.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 71,650 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israeli forces since October 7, 2023. Additionally, over 480 Palestinians have lost their lives due to Israeli actions post-ceasefire implementation.
Prior to the recovery of Gvili’s remains, 20 living hostages and the remains of 27 others had been repatriated to Israel since the ceasefire, with Israel reciprocating by transferring the bodies of numerous Palestinians to Gaza.
Recent incidents include the IDF’s fatal shooting of a Palestinian man in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood and the killing of another Palestinian in the eastern Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. The circumstances surrounding the latter’s death remain unclear.
