“Fired Waitrose Employee Offered Job at Competitor”

Date:

A Waitrose staff member who was fired for confronting a shoplifter has been offered a new position at a competing grocery store.

Walker Smith, who had been employed by Waitrose for 17 years, expressed feeling emotional after being let go for attempting to stop a thief from stealing multiple boxes of Easter eggs.

Upon noticing the individual rushing towards the exit with a haul of Lindt Gold Bunny Easter Eggs valued at £13 each, the 54-year-old reportedly engaged in a brief altercation with the shoplifter at the Clapham Junction store.

Two days later, he was notified that he would be terminated for violating Waitrose’s policy against confronting shoplifters.

However, Mr. Smith has now been presented with an opportunity to work at frozen food retailer Iceland, as the CEO, Lord Richard Walker, publicly offered him a job via social media.

Following Mr. Smith’s dismissal, a spokesperson from Waitrose emphasized the importance of the safety and security of their staff and customers. The spokesperson highlighted the risks involved in confronting shoplifters, stating that the company has strict policies in place to prevent endangering lives.

The spokesperson added that while they cannot discuss specific cases, they ensure that the correct procedures, including an appeals process, are followed in such situations.
