US and Iran Close to Finalizing Agreement amid Rising Tensions

Date:

The United States and Iran are moving closer to finalizing a memorandum of understanding to end the ongoing conflict, as reported by regional officials and a diplomat on Saturday. The US is contemplating new strikes against Iran while discussing potential agreements.

Iran has indicated progress in negotiations with the US following additional talks in Tehran involving Pakistan’s army chief. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned advancements in discussions and hinted at possible updates later in the day.

Optimism is high among officials and the diplomat that a decision on the document proposed by Pakistan could be made within 48 hours. They shared that US Vice President JD Vance and envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner played key roles in bridging remaining gaps, with Qatar’s involvement being crucial in supporting Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

US President Donald Trump remained quiet on social media at the White House on Saturday, as both Iran and the US reiterated their positions and warned against the risks of renewed hostilities. Rubio restated the US stance on Iran not obtaining a nuclear weapon, surrendering enriched uranium, and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson described the draft as a “framework agreement” aimed at ending the conflict, with discussions on various issues including the Strait of Hormuz. The spokesperson emphasized that nuclear matters are not currently part of the talks as Iran prioritizes resolving the conflict first.

Iran and the US have shown signs of narrowing differences, with a focus on ending the war before addressing nuclear concerns. Iranian officials stressed the importance of lifting sanctions and maintaining support for allies like Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran’s parliament speaker highlighted Iran’s military readiness and warned of severe consequences if hostilities resume. Trump had previously refrained from military action against Iran to facilitate negotiations. The conflict was initiated by US and Israel strikes in February, leading to a blockade of Iranian ports by the US.

Pakistan continues its efforts to facilitate direct negotiations between Iran and the US, with ongoing discussions involving senior officials. The role of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard in shaping Iran’s stance in the talks remains significant.
