The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) explains that if a smartphone becomes trapped within the seat’s mechanical parts after falling, adjusting the seat could lead to the device being crushed or damaged.
Beyond inconvenience, damaged phones pose a danger as the lithium batteries inside could overheat, potentially causing them to release flammable gases and increase the risk of fire.
In such a situation, it is advisable to inform a flight attendant promptly if a phone is dropped between seats. They are well-versed in the aircraft’s layout and can safely retrieve the phone before it escalates into a safety hazard.
According to an American Airlines spokesperson, flight attendants are trained to handle various seat intricacies and assist passengers in retrieving dropped items to prevent safety issues.
John Cox, CEO of aviation consulting firm Safety Operating Systems and a former pilot, also stresses that damaged electronics, like a dropped iPhone or Android, are more prone to thermal events, underscoring the importance of caution.
