Gunman captured on video shooting at family home as woman pleads for help and protection for her children. The incident, recorded by a Ring doorbell in Luton, was a significant part of the UK’s largest-ever organized crime investigation following the breach of an encrypted phone network used by criminals. The footage shows a masked individual approaching the property before brandishing a shotgun from a bag and firing at the door.
During the distressful moment, one of the victims, speaking in broken English to a police operator, reported the shooting and the presence of children in the house. The police swiftly dispatched armed officers to the scene to address the situation.
The scene is featured in the latest episode of 24 Hours in Police Custody, titled “The Secret Network,” showcasing Bedfordshire Police’s efforts to dismantle the underworld “command and control platform.” The investigation was fueled by crucial evidence obtained after law enforcement agencies in France and the Netherlands successfully breached the secretive EncroChat communication system for an extended period in 2020.
The episode follows detectives as they monitor criminal conversations about the trade of illicit goods, including firearms and drugs. In one instance, suspect Ethan Mitchell was implicated in the supply of the firearm used in the house attack after incriminating messages were uncovered.
Despite being cleared of supplying the weapon, Mitchell, known as “frontrunner” on the platform, was sentenced to nine years in prison for possession with intent to distribute MDMA, cocaine, and illicit funds. His arrest followed a high-speed chase where authorities discovered drugs and a sizeable amount of cash in his possession.
Mitchell’s conviction was part of Operation Costello, Bedfordshire Police’s contribution to the nationwide Operation Venetic investigation targeting the Encrochat system. Criminals using the network operated under aliases, requiring officers to decode their virtual identities to establish their involvement in illegal activities.
Detective Superintendent Julie Henderson highlighted the challenges of identifying suspects who operated under pseudonyms. Through thorough investigation, her team successfully linked individuals like Kamran Bashir, Blazej Holub, and Ibraz Iqbal to drug trafficking activities conducted via the EncroChat platform.
Arrests were made, and substantial amounts of drugs and cash were seized from the suspects. Bashir and Holub each received sentences of 16 years and three months, while Iqbal was sentenced to 12 years and seven months.
The takedown of the global secret phone network resulted in the prevention of over 200 planned murders within the criminal underworld. Law enforcement’s infiltration led to the apprehension of numerous high-profile criminals and corrupt officials, resulting in the confiscation of millions in illegal funds, drugs, and firearms.
Among those arrested, drug kingpin Jordan Talbot received one of the lengthiest sentences, serving over 21 years for his involvement in drug trafficking activities facilitated by EncroChat. Other perpetrators, like Gary Mitchell and Carl Stewart, were also convicted based on incriminating evidence obtained from the network.
The extensive crackdown on criminal activities orchestrated through EncroChat culminated in the exposure and dismantling of numerous illicit operations, leading to significant convictions and disruptions in organized crime networks.
