A former nuclear protection specialist who previously served in the United States Air Force has characterized the current conflict in Iran as the most perilous security situation in the Middle East since 1990. Recent events unfolded over the weekend when both the US and Israel conducted strikes against Iran as part of Operation Epic Fury.
Following the strikes, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with several military officials, were killed in Tehran. In retaliation, Iran has launched extensive attacks across the Gulf region, targeting countries such as Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, and Qatar. Tragically, three US service members lost their lives in Kuwait, and an attack drone struck RAF Akrotiri, a British airbase in Cyprus.
According to Gene Sticco, a former US Air Force nuclear protection specialist, the conflict’s impact has already surpassed anything seen since the Gulf War. In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, Gene, who previously managed security operations for energy companies like Shell and BHP, shared insights on the volatile and deteriorating situation in the Gulf.
When asked about the global security implications of the conflict, Gene emphasized the extreme danger of the current scenario. He highlighted the full-scale military engagement between the US, Israel, and Iran, noting the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader and the apparent fragmentation of the IRGC’s command structure. Gene cautioned that a military operating without coherent leadership poses an increased threat due to individual commanders making independent decisions.
He further pointed out that the lack of centralized control could lead to escalating retaliatory actions, as evidenced by the recent strikes. Gene underscored the significance of the drone attack on the NATO-affiliated RAF base in Cyprus, emphasizing the expanding scope of the conflict.
As the conflict continues to unfold, Gene expressed concern about the creation of new fronts with each new target, leading to further escalation. He labeled the current security environment in the Middle East as the most dangerous since 1990, possibly even since 1973, highlighting the rapid and widespread nature of the conflict.
