The latest move by the Trump administration to expand the federal death penalty in the United States, including the consideration of firing squads as a method of execution, has drawn criticism from Pope Leo. The US Department of Justice announced its intentions today, outlining the legal basis for various execution methods.
In response to these plans, the Pope emphasized the sanctity of human life according to Catholic teachings, expressing support for those advocating against the death penalty in the US and globally. He urged for a greater recognition of the dignity of every individual and encouraged efforts towards this shared humanitarian goal.
Additionally, the Department of Justice disclosed its efforts to accelerate death penalty cases by streamlining internal processes and lifting the Biden-era moratorium on federal executions. Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche has already greenlighted seeking death sentences for nine out of the 44 defendants identified for such punishment.
Notably, former President Trump had previously signaled his commitment to pursuing federal death penalties through an executive order issued early in his tenure, instructing the attorney general to ensure states had an ample supply of lethal injection substances.
