A former Catholic school teacher was convicted of engaging in sexual activities with underage students, including performing oral sex in a classroom cupboard. Anthony Redmond, 54, from Fort Austin Avenue, Plymouth, faced charges related to abusing his position of trust by engaging in sexual acts with two girls under 18 at Notre Dame Catholic school in Plymouth.
The incidents occurred in the early 2000s while Redmond worked as a geography teacher. He was found guilty of all charges, which included full intercourse with both victims and inappropriate acts at various locations, such as his residence, school grounds, and a hotel. One victim expressed feeling “used and worthless” by Redmond, emphasizing that he took advantage of her innocence and violated her trust for his own gratification.
During the trial, it was revealed that Redmond denied the allegations but was unanimously convicted by the jury. The prosecutor highlighted his age difference with the victims and his attempts to downplay his actions. One victim described Redmond as “sick and twisted,” stating that he manipulated her vulnerability and innocence for his own purposes.
In court, the victims shared the lasting impact of Redmond’s actions on their lives. They criticized the school and staff for overlooking the abuse, with one victim expressing anger at being targeted by Redmond’s predatory behavior. Despite claims of being a model father and references attesting to his character, Redmond was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison. He was also issued a restraining order and required to register as a sex offender.
