Lord Triesman, a former Labour minister and ex-chairman of the Football Association, has passed away at the age of 82, as confirmed by Labour today.
Baroness Angela Smith, leader of Labour in the House of Lords, praised Lord Triesman for his esteemed qualities of kindness, wisdom, loyalty, and generosity. He peacefully passed away at home on Friday evening, as per the Labour Party’s announcement, which highlighted his diverse background as a politician, trade union leader, academic, and merchant banker.
Previously serving as the general secretary of the Association of University Teachers and the Labour Party, David Triesman entered the House of Lords in 2004 under Sir Tony Blair’s government. Sir Tony Blair, former prime minister, remembered him as a key figure in the New Labour movement and a dedicated advocate for positive change in society.
Throughout his career, Lord Triesman held various roles, including as a Foreign Office minister and under-secretary of state for innovation, universities, and skills. His contributions extended to being Labour’s shadow minister for foreign affairs and serving on significant select committees.
Labour’s statement highlighted his active involvement in the House of Lords and his service as a Lord in Waiting to Queen Elizabeth II. Known as a devoted Tottenham Hotspur supporter, he was the first patron of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and the inaugural independent chair of the Football Association. Lord Triesman actively opposed racism in football and championed the advancement of women’s football, later playing a key role in exposing corruption within Fifa.
His passing was mourned by family and friends for his warmth, love, humor, and unwavering support for younger generations. Survived by his wife Lucy and daughter Ilona, the family requested privacy during this difficult time.
