“Former SNP Chief Accused of Lavish Spending with Party Funds”

Date:

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell allegedly used party funds for extravagant personal purchases, including a £3,200 luxury coffee machine, nearly £2,000 worth of umbrellas, and a book of speeches by his estranged wife, Nicola Sturgeon. Sturgeon announced the end of their marriage in January 2025.

An indictment against Murrell reveals numerous purchases prosecutors claim were financed through embezzled SNP money, showcasing his lavish spending habits. Items bought with the misappropriated funds ranged from a motorhome and cars to high-end home comforts, collectibles, and gadgets, such as a £1,199 Celestron NexStar telescope and accessories.

Murrell’s shopping spree also included a £3,231 coffee machine, designer kitchenware, household items, personal accessories like manicure sets, and entertainment purchases like DVDs and video games. The list featured diverse items such as a Monopoly board game, weather station equipment, and luxury gifts.

Despite admitting to embezzling over £400,000, Murrell’s wife, Nicola Sturgeon, claimed she was unaware of the personal items bought using party funds. Sturgeon emphasized that they maintained separate finances, and she had no access to Murrell’s financial records. She stated her innocence following a thorough investigation by Police Scotland.

The spending spree extended to hobbies, outdoor gear, and miscellaneous items, showcasing a mix of luxury and practical purchases. Despite the controversy, Sturgeon maintained that she had no reason to doubt Murrell’s use of personal funds for known purchases.
