A former teacher shares her decision to leave the profession due to repeated physical and verbal abuse experienced during her career, leading her to reconsider her once-beloved dream job. Alice Scholz, inspired by her mother to pursue teaching, faced distressing incidents, including being harmed by students in the classroom and encountering aggressive behavior from parents.
“I’ve endured physical and verbal abuse throughout my teaching journey, with some incidents being particularly distressing,” stated Alice, who resides in Windsor. She recounted being punched, scratched, and even grabbed inappropriately while trying to assist a student. In one instance, a parent confronted her aggressively over a minor issue involving their child.
Alice, who originally hails from Australia, highlighted the contrasting experiences between the Australian and UK education systems. While her early teaching years in Australia provided creative freedom and a balanced work-life environment, the UK system felt more pressure-driven and less accommodating to student needs.
Despite the challenges faced, Alice expressed gratitude for the positive moments in her teaching career but emphasized the importance of self-care and boundaries in a profession that can lead to burnout. She acknowledged that while teaching is rewarding, it can also be draining without proper support and boundaries in place.
Looking ahead, Alice is exploring new opportunities outside of the teaching field, including upskilling in project management and considering corporate roles. She remains open-minded about her future career path, prioritizing her well-being and seeking roles that align with her boundaries and values.
