A 17-year-old tourist tragically lost her life in a suspected hit-and-run incident on the Costa del Sol after witnessing her national team’s victory in the World Cup. The victim, Nikoline Piwoni Høie, was struck by a vehicle, believed to be a lorry, on a dual carriageway in the early hours of Monday.
The tragic event took place on the A-7 motorway near La Cala de Mijas, approximately 20 miles from Marbella in southern Spain. The driver fled the scene without stopping. Nikoline was reported missing after a night out with friends at the Funky Buddha nightclub in Puerto Banús.
She had been celebrating Norway’s 2-1 win over Brazil in the World Cup with fellow Norwegians before the incident. Emergency services were notified around 5:20 am, and Nikoline was discovered on the road but could not be saved.
Nikoline had been vacationing in the Costa del Sol since June 19 and was scheduled to return to Norway on the same day. The Spanish Civil Guard is treating her death as a hit-and-run, and efforts are ongoing to identify the vehicle and driver involved. No arrests have been made thus far.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Finn Greve-Isdahl expressed their deep sorrow and gratitude to the Arendal community for their support. Nikoline’s stepmother described her anticipation of returning home as she labeled the situation unfair and a nightmare.
Arendal’s acting mayor, Inger Brokka de Ruiter, acknowledged the incident as deeply tragic and confirmed that local support services are assisting affected individuals. The Norwegian Foreign Ministry has been notified, and the embassy stands ready to provide assistance.
The investigation into the incident continues.
